I have used a number of different charcoal grills, and the Weber Gold is the best. Unless you want to spend twice the price and buy the Weber Performer, which is a Weber Gold with gas ignition, table, and a place to store charcoal. Not sure why you would want to store charcoal outside where it can absorb moisture, but that is another story.

First off the Weber is made with a thicker steel, so it retains the heat better than the cheaper, lighter, offshore made products. The grill is heavier, so you can get more than one season out of it. The ash catcher is great. Its a must have feature. Other units get ashes all over my deck, which is unacceptable, and a fire hazard on windy days.

My Weber Gold is about 10 years old. I replaced the cooking grate once. It still functions perfectly. It lives outside and only has one tiny spot of rust, where the cover got hit with a rock and it chipped the paint. One day I will get around to sanding and painting that spot so it lasts another 10 years. The aluminum portions of the grill are a little weathered, but still function perfectly. I guess if I really wanted to I could polish them up, but a little oxidation does not bother me.

The only downside I can even think about is the top handle. It is plastic, not wood. Sometimes it gets too hot to handle so I have to use a potholder if I am cooking at a very high temperature. Other than that, it is the best charcoal grill on the planet.

Sure you can buy one cheaper, but they will not last. Buy a Weber and you will leave it to your children when you die. And they will get many years of use out of it too!

And, for good reason. The design provides the versatility to use either direct or indirect heat, so Old Smokey functions as both a grill and smoker. The 18 inch diameter grill is perfect for a small family, but if I could do it over I'd just go for the 22 inch model so I could cook for a larger crowd. You should spring for the leg extensions, otherwise the grill won't stand waist high and you'll do a lot of bending over or squatting to tend to your 'cue. Reserve the shorter legs that come with it for camping outings. As for aesthetics, I think the Old Smokey has a lot of character. It's a great conversation piece, and, unless you live in Texas, you'll be one of the only folks on your block to have one! It's a fantastic little grill for the money. The only drawback I've found is that the simple design makes it hard to add charcoal. Unlike the PK, the grill is one piece, so you have to remove the meat and grill to add more charcoal. A slight hassle, perhaps, but for a product priced at around , you really can't complain. This great grill is well thought-out in all its details, and comes at a very reasonable price. I don't understand why anyone buys a Weber.

The Char-Griller is built of heavy steel (not flimsy sheet), and the cooking grates are true cast iron grates (not light wire). The cooking surface is large and easily accessible, and the charcoal grate is adjustable up-and-down, solid, and easily removable. The grates come in several sections, which are easily removed, hot or cold, with the handy cast-iron handle. The warming shelf can be useful, and when it's in the way, it's easy to remove. Air flow is easy to control. Char-Griller's rotisserie attachment lets you roast very large beef roasts, pork loins, or chickens (I did a whole baby lamb!). The shelves, front and side, are handy, as is the built-in thermometer. The storage grate below is large and useful.

There are a few minor things that could be improved. The hooks that hold the charcoal grate are a bit small and fiddly. The side air damper is made of too-light metal, and its control tab broke off. The legs seem a little lightweight compared to the body of the grill. The rotisserie spit runs at the level of the cooking grate, so you can't use them together (a couple of grates will fit, but the charcoal will be too close for the rotisserie if it is the right distance for grilling).

But these are minor. Overall, this is a great charcoal grill and smoker, very reasonably priced.

Having owned several Smokey Joe Silvers (small, regular version) over the years, I knew I could trust Weber to make a good quality portable grill. At first I was a bit skeptical about the lack of holes at the bottom and a charcoal dust catcher, but the side vents (which are obscured in the pictures) provided adequate ventilation for the coals while containing the charcoal dust in the bottom of the kettle. I used to carry my old Smokey Joe in a garbage bag to keep the dust out of my car. With this version, I don't believe this will be necessary. For my "maiden cookout", I had a campsite right on the beach with some pretty strong winds. The Smokey Joe Gold performed excellent! Love the lid latch! I noticed that some of the reviews for this product were negative as they had issues with coal ventilation. I had another campsite that was virtually windless and had no problems as well. I imagine this has a lot to do with the quality of charcoal (ahem, Kingsford) and quantity of lighter fluid, plus the time allowed to soak and burn time before cooking.

Almost every family has a microwave and a kind of microwave cookware they use for cooking.
